A new government crisis was averted today when the Cabinet gave in to a demand by the religious parties that it submit to Parliament a bill authorizing municipalities to restrict or forbid the raising of hogs and the sale of pork.
The Hapoel Hamizrachi Ministers in the Cabinet threatened to resign when a Ministerial Committee dealing with the problem came up with a bill merely giving the local councils the right to restrict hog raising. Justice Minister Pinchas Rosen, Progressive leader, sided with the religious Ministers on the ground that the agreement on which the coalition government was based had guaranteed government support of the hog ban.
The Cabinet also adopted the draft of a law empowering the Finance Minister, in consultation with the State Bank, to fix the rate of interest and to make it a criminal offense to charge more than nine percent interest. The nine percent legal interest limit is being exceeded through all kinds of fictitious deals.
