Secretary of State John Foster Dulles declined at his press conference today to comment on pending American diplomatic changes involving the Middle East.
The changes about which Mr. Dulles was questioned involve Henry A. Byroade, U.S. Ambassador to Egypt, and George V. Allen, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs. Secretary Dulles explained that he could not comment until agreement of foreign governments was received in connection with the assignment of diplomats to new posts. He said it was not considered appropriate to comment prematurely.
Asked about the status of possible U.S. assistance on the Egyptian Aswan Dam project, Mr. Dulles said he would not want to answer until he has seen the Egyptian Ambassador. He added that a number of things had happened since the U.S. offer was made and that these had to be taken into account.
