American Attempt to Build Reform Synagogue in Jerusalem Fails Again

A fourth attempt to obtain action on a request for a building permit for the projected American School of Archaeology at Jerusalem including a Reform synagogue room in the school’s library failed here last night when Herut and Religious bloc members boycotted a meeting of the City Council, leaving it without a quorum.

Until the council acts, Dr. Nelson Glueck, president of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, which is sponsoring the school, cannot appeal to the Supreme Court–a move which he has threatened. The boycott followed a statement by the Israel Chief Rabbinate banning the Reform movement from Israel. The religious parties, without whose support the Mapai Mayor could not hold office, have threatened to leave the coalition if the council grants the building permit.
