The British Cabinet met today to study Egyptian President Nasser’s reply to the five power commission on negotiations for international control of the Suez Canal. Sir Anthony Eden, the Prime Minister, later saw Krishna Menon, Menon’s departure for Cairo to see President Nasser.
President Nasser’s reply was reported to rule out the Dulles plan of international control for the waterway but to express a willingness to discuss the future of the canal. He reportedly took the position that his agreement to talk with the commission did not commit him to any course of action. Egyptian sources quoted from Cairo declared the Dulles plan was “fundamentally unacceptable” and could not be used as a basis for negotiations.
