Civil service examinations for positions in Massachusetts normally held on Saturdays, will be switched to another day for Sabbath observers. The Massachusetts Civil Service Commission announcement of the procedure said that competitive examinations would be set up on dates which do not conflict with the religious practices of Sabbath observers. The initiative petition for the change, which will also affect Seventh Day Adventists, was filed by the New England Region, American Jewish Congress.
The Commission’s ruling, issued after a hearing on the subject, agreed that “arrangements be made to allow Seventh Day observers to participate in competitive examinations in a manner which will permit such applicants the widest latitude in meeting their religious convictions without impairing the competitive conditions required by law and in a manner within the constitutional, statutory and fiscal regulations of the Commonwealth.”
