The Greek freighter “Pennegia,” bound for the Israeli Red Sea port of Elath and detained at Port Said by the Egyptian Government’s refusal to grant her freedom of passage through the Suez Canal since May 25, has been recalled to the port of Haifa by her charterers.
Commenting on the new move, necessitated by what was characterized as Egypt’s continued violation of international law and callous disregard of ordinary human rights the captain and crew of the freighter were not permitted to go ashore during the entire period nor were they allowed to contact the authorities–an Israel Foreign Ministry spokesman here declared:
“Col. Nasser has demonstrated in the most brazen and unequivocal way his contempt for the obligations under the Constantinople Convention and the explicit ruling of the Security Council of September, 1951, at the very time he is seeking to persuade the world that he is ready to safeguard freedom of shipping through the canal.”
