Layam, a Haifa company which supplies a variety of goods to ships, charged today the British-American Tobacco Company with refusing to sell it cigarettes and with yielding to the Arab states boycott against Israel.
Layam said that last March it placed an order through the Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company of Louisville, Kentucky, export agents for British-American, for 1,000,000 cigarettes. The order was refused with a note that “until further notice no order will be met from Israel.”
Layam said when it asked for a reason, the company explained that its close relations with the Arab countries might be endangered through continuing trade with Israel.
(Officials of Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corporation, when queried by the JTA, stated that “with respect to British-American Tobacco Company, Ltd. Brown and Williamson was agent for export only.” They added that “it is the intention of Brown and Williamson to continue to ship its own brands anywhere in the world, including Israel, where U. S. dollars are available in payment.”)
