The International Red Cross has made contact with the Egyptian Rabbinate, has obtained from it lists of interned Egyptian Jews, and Red Cross representatives have already visited some of the imprisoned Jews, Dr. Louis Guillard, a Red Cross representative, announced here last night. Dr. Guillard accompanied a party of 26 wounded Egyptian soldiers who were repatriated through the Red Cross. He returned here via Italy.
The Red Cross, he said, is attempting to meet with Egyptian and Israeli authorities to discuss the prisoner of war situation. The Egyptians unofficially admit to holding only one Israeli prisoner, a pilot named Johanan Etkes, who was wounded. Israel has supplied the Red Cross with a complete list of Egyptian prisoners.
Dr. Guillard revealed that the Egyptians have rejected an Israeli proposal for an exchange of 400 Egyptian Jews for 400 Egyptian civilians held by Israel in the Gaza area. Dr. Guillard revealed that the Red Cross has supplied blankets for many interned Egyptian Jews and has assisted others to leave the country.
