A joint delegation representing the Jewish Immigrant Aid Society and the Canadian Jewish Congress has discussed with Canadian immigration officials extending refugee status to Egyptian Jews exiled by Nasser in order to speed up their processing as prospective immigrants, the CJC announced here.
Present at that meeting, the first of several, was Minister of Citizenship and Immigration J. W. Pickersgill and his Deputy Minister. The latter its scheduled to meet at another parley with the Jewish delegation to work out specific details. At the initial meeting, the CJC reported, the Canadian authorities were sympathetic toward the issues raised by the Jewish leaders.
Applicants for Canadian immigration will have to be assisted to appear be fore Canadian consular officials in Western Europe, except in Vienna and Rome. In those two cities the Canadian immigration machinery is jam packed with a huge backlog of applications, the CJC said.
Meanwhile, it was revealed that United Hias Service has processed 1,309 Hungarian Jewish refugees for immigration to Canada. A total of 265 has already departed for this country.
