The inauguration of the first direct freight service from the Great Lakes to Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Israel and ports in other Eastern Mediterranean countries was announced here today by the American-Israeli Shipping Company which represents the Zim Navigation Company of Israel.
The Zim Lines Great Lakes service will call regularly at Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, Cleveland, Toledo, Toronto and Montreal to load cargo for Pirasus, Lakenderm. Haifa, Tel Aviv and other Mediterranean ports as cargo offers. The Zim Lines contemplate regular service between the Great Lakes and the Levant with 7, 000 ton freighter now being built for this purpose and expected to be ready for the opening of the St, Lawrence Seaway. For the time being, Zim will employ chartered vessels of shallow draft. The first, the steamer “Askholm,” sails from Chicago in mid-June, via Milwaukee, Toledo and Detroit for Piraeus, Iskenderun, Haifa and Tel Aviv.
