About 12, 000 Jewish refugees from Egypt, Hungary, other Eastern European countries and North Africa are expected to enter Israel during May–a substantial increase over the influx in April, William Rosenwald, general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, reported today after receiving a cablegram from Dov Joseph, treasurer of the Jewish Agency, which urged “a superhuman effort” to make UJA funds available for refugee rescue.
At the same time, Mr. Rosenwald announced that United States Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, of Texas, Senate Majority leader, Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Zionist Organization and of the Jewish Agency, and Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, Abba Eban, will be the principal speakers at the UJA National Rescue Conference to open in New York on June 8. The purpose of the conference is to raise $50, 000, 000 in cash from previously made pledges.
“This prediction for the May immigration to Israel exceeds the April immigration by 3, 000, ” Mr. Rosenwald noted. “The unexpected increase in the tempo of migration makes imperative the successful completion of UJA’s nation-wide effort to convert pledges made earlier this year to the UJA’s $100, 000, 000 Emergency Rescue Fund and regular 1957 UJA campaign into cash. “
Mr. Rosenwald noted that present estimates foresee the resettlement of a possible 120, 000 Jewish refugees in Israel, the United States and other free countries, an increase of 20, 000 over the 100, 000 Jewish refugees originally estimated as needing rescue in 1957. In his cable to Mr. Rosenwald and the Officers of the UJA, Mr. Joseph said that “we must furnish transportation and provide the immigrants with roofs to cover their heads upon their arrival. “
