Premier David Ben Gurion intervened today in an attempt to settle a month-old strike against the Ata textile manufacturing company in Haifa. In the midst of a heated meeting of the Mapai central committee over the strike, Mr. Ben Gurion urged party unity on the issue and the avoidance of friction.
At the conclusion of the meeting, a special committee consisting of Histadrut officials and several Ministers and ex-Ministers was appointed to draft a party policy toward the strike. Most members of the central committee expressed opposition to continuation of the walkout, but the secretary of the Haifa Labor Council, Yossef Almogi, who previously was responsible for the conduct of the action, insisted that improvement of working conditions at the plant was imperative.
