Edward B. Lawson, United States Ambassador to Israel, stated here tonight that the solution of the difficult problems of security and economic viability facing Israel is “vital to the peace of the entire world.”
Speaking to 400 guests assembled at a dinner for Bar-Han University in Israel, Ambassador Lawson said that “our country’s firm dedication to a Middle Eastern policy of justice and fair treatment for all countries favors the existence of a strong, progressive and democratic Israel.” The dinner launched an exchange scholarship program for students of Adelphi College, Garden City, Long Island, Hofstra College, Hempstead, Long Island, and Bar-Ilan University in Israel.
Ambassador Lawson, who returned to the United States on leave yesterday said that he was “confident that, despite any past failure of some in Israel to completely understand or agree with our past policies as they affect Israel, there is wide appreciation of our resolute determination to base our policies on principle. I have seen, “the Ambassador continued,” no tendency in any responsible quarter in Israel to question the honesty of purpose or the basic objectives of our policy despite certain difficulties Israel may have experienced under those policies.”
