The Israel Government today asked the International Red Cross headquarters in Geneva to establish the fate of the Israel fishing vessel Doar and its six crewmen seized last week by Egypt. Earlier, the Foreign Ministry asked the Israel delegation at the United Nations to try to discover the fate of the vessel and its crew and to seek UN intervention.
The Israel Government also sought Italy’s intervention because one of the crew was an Italian. The International Red Cross was asked to send a representative to visit the fishermen to determine whether they were receiving the treatment required by Geneva conventions and to provide whatever legal protection might be needed. Israel also asked the Red Cross to obtain from the fishermen communications to their families in Israel.
The Foreign Ministry indicated it had no information on the fate of the ship or its crew except that neither had been returned to Israel. Owners of the ship said that, on tie basis of the last radio communication from the ship, they had no doubt that the boat was captured outside Egyptian territorial waters.
