The Soviet propaganda machine took note today of the first anniversary of Israel’s Sinai campaign with a charge that the United States had actually masterminded the blitz foray into Egypt. The charge was made in an editorial in “Trud,” the Communist Labor newspaper and broadcast by Moscow Radio.
A British newspaper, the London Daily Express, in a survey of the effect of the Sinai campaign, declared today that apart from the fact that he was still in office, President Nasser of Egypt had little to celebrate on this first anniversary.”
“Both the morale and equipment of his army has been destroyed,” the Daily Express said. “His air force is no longer taken seriously. His vital Aswan dam project is further away than ever.”
The newspaper added that Israel, whom he planned to destroy, is stronger and more prosperous, with ships busily plying the long-blockaded Gulf of Akaba.”
