34th Annual Convention of Labor Israel Committee Opens in New York

The “grave clouds” hovering over the Middle East can be dispelled “only by the free world’s courageous support of democratic forces in the area,” according to a message cabled by Israel’s Prime Minister David Ben Gurion to the 34th annual convention of the National Committee for Labor Israel which opened here today.

The convention, attended by 2, 500 delegates from all parts of the United States and Canada, will continue through Sunday. A luncheon session will be dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the United Nations’ resolution in favor of partitioning Palestine and establishing a Jewish State. Abba S. Eban will be guest of honor.

Mr. Ben Gurion, in his message, lauded the National Committee for Labor Israel for its “determination and efforts to achieve the great goal which history has set the Jews of this generation.” Messages were received also from Israel’s President Itzhak Ben Zvi Minister of Labor Mordecai Namir, Speaker of Parliament Joseph Sprinzak, and others.

The National Committee for Labor Israel is composed of 1, 500 affiliated bodies including trade unions, Labor Zionist groups, business and industry councils; fraternal and civic organizations. Established in 1923 by the United Hebrew Trades, it has raised over $50,000,000 to help the pioneers and workers in Israel develop medical, vocational training, cultural and rehabilitation institutions.
