The first organized attack on an Israeli settlement in many months was carried out last night by armed Jordanians, a military spokesman announced today. The assault took place at Adulan, a settlement in the Lachish area north of Beit Jibrin.
The Jordanian raiders, using hand grenades, attacked settlement guards and blasted a house. They were quickly repulsed when reinforcements arrived One watchman was slightly wounded. A second attack was carried out this morning on Israeli workers in a field south of Jerusalem. The Jordanians fired on workers at the Ramath Rachel settlement but apparently hit no one.
The new Jordanian attacks are regarded here very seriously. Up to now, incidents involving Jordan were thought of as attempts by the Jordanian authorities to “save face” in the Arab world where King Hussein has been under attack for allegedly negotiating with Israel. However, the attack on a settlement is far graver than isolated attempts to kidnap Israelis.
