Israeli Ambassador Abba Eban met today with William Rountree, Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, and held an extensive political review of the effects of world tension on the Middle East.
Mr. Eban said the Middle East picture was summarized in the light of current international events. Today’s discussion, he said, did not touch on economic matters. It mainly dealt with global peace and security and effects of the broader world crisis on the Middle East, including the recent missions of United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammar skjold and his personal representative, Dr. Francisco Urrutia of Colombia.
Mr. Eban discussed matters arising out of the Hammarskjold mission to Israel and Jordan. A number of detailed points were covered, he said. It is believed that today’s visit by the Ambassador to the State Department was connected with a talk held a few days ago by Secretary of State John Foster Dulles and Mr. Hammarskjold on the Arab-Israel situation.
