Israel has informed the United States, Britain and France that any United Nations Security Council discussion at this time of the Jordan complaint against Israel’s afforestation project in the no-man’s land area outside Jerusalem would endanger the mission of Dr. Francisco Urrutia, Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold’s representative here.
Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister, yesterday summoned the Western envoys separately and informed them that Security Council debate would “seriously jeopardize attempts by Dr. Francisco Urrutia to obtain compliance with the Mt. Scopus agreement of 1948.” The Colombian diplomat has been shuttling back and forth between Jerusalem and Amman attempting to reach an accord to demilitarize the strategic height.
Mrs. Meir’s warning, which was also voiced to envoys here of other Security Council member states, noted that in Israel’s view both matters pertained to Israel-Jordan relations and that if an attempt were made to air one dispute before the international tribunal Israel would insist on a discussion of both.
