Six Hungarian immigrants were fined and scored by an Ottawa magistrate for creating a disturbance in a tavern and calling one of the waiters a “dirty Jew.” Crown Attorney Raoul Mercier commented in court that the immigrants “had been well treated by this country” and “for you to insult the nationality of anyone is inexcusable.”
This is not the first occasion that Hungarian immigrants have displayed anti-Semitic tendencies. Recently in St. John, New Brunswick, a group of Hungarians on arrival attacked their fellow Jewish immigrants because they were Jews. Many of these Hungarians have appeared in court for such criminal actions as rape. Entry of this undesirable element among the immigrants has been blamed by government sources on the lack of screening of the Hungarians–a procedure that is obligatory for all immigrants. Because of the emergency in the instance of the Hungarians the screening was not carried out.
