An appeal for cultural exchange between the Jewries of North and South America was made by Dr. Fritz Winter, of Montevideo, in the course of a luncheon in his honor by the World Jewish Congress in New York. Dr. Winter, a member of the WJC presidium in Uruguay, gave a detailed account of the activities of Uruguayan Jewry.
Urging the development of what he called “Jewish Pan-Americanism,” Dr. Winter appealed for Jewish lecturers and scholars from the United States to visit Uruguay and all Latin American communities, and he sought American Jewry’s aid for scholarships enabling Jewish teachers, communal personnel and youth to spend six months studying in American Jewish institutions.
Dr. Winter, who is the rabbi of the 5,000-member German-speaking community in Montevideo, said there was a shortage not only of professional personnel in his and all Latin American communities, but also of Jewish textbooks and pedagogic materials in Spanish. Although there is a great deal of Jewish content in the life of Uruguayan Jewry, Rabbi Winter said there were the beginnings of inter-marriage. He spoke warmly of the freedom accorded to all sectors of the Uruguayan population, irrespective of race or religion.
