The question of a merger between the General Zionist and Herut movements was the main issue under discussion here today at the meeting of the World Union of General Zionists. Some of the Israeli General Zionists favor amalgamation, the American delegates oppose it and the Latin American delegates, in the main, are prepared to support it if the Israelis so decide.

A message was received today by the conference from Dr. Nahum Goldmann, president of the World Zionist Organization, who regretted his inability to attend the parley in person. “The Zionist movement is facing a task fateful to its and Israel’s future,” Dr. Goldmann’s message said. “It’s main task is to organize the nation for the fullest cooperation in assuming responsibility for the state’s consolidation and to provide the means for the manpower which would be needed in the second decade.” He expressed the hope that the conference would contribute to these tasks.
