In one of a series of trials of members of the ultra-Orthodox Neturei Karta, Magistrate Morno Levy fined 13 defendants 50 pounds each for continually interrupting court procedures. The defendants are accused of illegal participation in demonstrations against a projected swimming pool in Jerusalem in which mixed bathing will be permitted.
Holding the 13 guilty of contempt, the Magistrate said that court proceedings must continue in accordance with the law and in the presence of the defendants who wanted to leave the courtroom while witnesses were being sworn. His comment was greeted with shouts of “Inquisition, Nazis, Hitler,” by the defendants who included Rabbi Amram Blau, leader of the sect.
