May Day parades in this and other cities and towns of Israel featured the theme of the nation’s achievements, with large contingents of workers driving agricultural machinery and heavy equipment on trucks in various demonstrations.
In Haifa, some 20,000 workers from the city and suburbs paraded past a grandstand in which Mayor Abba Chushi and Joseph Almogi, secretary of the city’s Histadrut organization, reviewed the marchers. Secretary General Pinchas Lavon of the Histadrut addressed the holidaying workers. Prominent among the marchers were Arab and Druze contingents. Arab groups were also in the forefront in Jerusalem’s parade.
