The New Jersey State Assembly has postponed until next Monday a vote on a bill to exempt from the provisions of the state law forcing closure of businesses on Sunday, those businessmen who keep open on Sunday but close for religious reasons on another day of the week.
Passage of a clear-cut exemption had been pressed by the New Jersey Region of the American Jewish Congress and by the Seventh Day Adventists, who also keep the Sabbath.
In a message circulated to every Assemblyman, AJC regional president Adrian Unger charged that, as presently enforced, the Sunday Law “entrenches upon religious liberties” and displays “indifference to the religious needs and requirements of those who may dissent from the majority religious practice.”
