Label A. Katz, chairman of a special committee of the New Orleans Jewish Federation, testified before the Louisiana State Senate in opposition to a bill which would schedule all primary elections on Saturdays. Because of the overwhelming nature of Democratic Party support in this state, winning a primary contest is tantamount to election.
In his testimony, Mr. Katz pointed out that if primaries are held on Saturdays observant Jews would have the unpleasant choice of violating their religious principles or being disenfranchised. Mr. Katz noted that certain Christian groups, such as the Seventh Day Adventists, would be in the same boat.
