Morris W. Berinstein, general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, arrived here today from Israel, after heading the UJA’s 100-member study mission which surveyed the requirements of UJA-supported operations aiding Jewish refugees, immigrants to Israel and Jews in need in a score of countries abroad.
Mr. Berinstein will give a preliminary report of the UJA mission’s findings when he delivers the opening address at the General Assembly of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds in Washington on Thursday evening. The UJA head returned in advance of the 100-man Study Mission in order to address the Council conference.
(At a dinner tendered the mission in Jerusalem by Premier David BenGurion, the delegates resolved to raise in 1959 huge sums in addition to the regular UJA goal. The resolution made special note of the immediate need to build housing for immigrants living in canvas, wood and tin shacks while waiting for permanent homes. The Premier told his American guests that the best things in Israel were in the process of coming into being and would be functioning within the next decade: the flowering of the Negev desert, the great port of Elath, and basic industries.)
