A Jew was elected Mayor of this city, and another has been chosen Deputy Mayor, in balloting by the City Council. Former Deputy Mayor Ian Maltz has been elected Mayor, the seventh Jew to hold this post in the history of Johannesburg as a municipality. Chosen as Deputy Mayor was Alec Gorshel, who plays a prominent role in the city’s cultural life.
