Israeli farmers and hastily-mobilized Ministry of Agriculture specialists began today a war on hordes of red locusts who have settled on the new crops in the Western Negev.
This morning planes equipped with chemical spray tanks joined the battle, even as new swarms were reported heading toward Israeli fields. The Western Negev has suffered from a prolonged drought and now, after the first rains brought young green shoots above ground, the crops are threatened again.
