Marc Chagall, the noted painter, has been elected an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and its affiliate, the National Academy of Arts and Letters. Honorary membership is limited to 50 foreigners who have distinguished themselves in the arts.
Mr. Chagall, who was born in Russia, has spent most of his life in France. He lived in the United States for six years during the forties. Some of his most famous works are on specifically Jewish themes, particularly Russian Jewish life.
