Leaders of Hadassah from all parts of the United States joined last night at the Delmonico Hotel in paying tribute to Mrs. Edward Jacobs, a former national president of Hadassah, on the occasion of her 70th birthday anniversary.
Mrs. Jacobs was the youngest of the twelve women–led by Miss Henrietta Szold–who founded Hadassah in 1912. Under Miss Szold’s presidency of Hadassah. Mrs. Jacobs was vice president of the organization from 1922-25. From 1930-33 and again from 193S-37. Mrs. Jacobs was national president cf Hadassah. At the dinner last night she was lauded for her activities by Dr. Miriam K. Freund, national president of Hadassah; Mrs. Da-.id E. Greenberg, member of Hadassah’s National Board, and others.
In responding to the tributes. Mrs. Jacobs said: “Ism greatly indebted to Zionism and Hadassah for the many privileges and opportunities I have enjoyed–opportunities which led me to new worlds of endeavor. “Paying high tribute to Henrietta Szold, founder of Hadassah, she recalled some of the high points in their relationship, especially during the early days of Hadassah. Mrs. Jacobs also recalled her first trip to Palestine in 1914 on her honeymoon, observing that even on this occasion she carried out a mission for Miss Szold by observing the work of Hadassah’s first health mission to the Holy Land. She then traced the development of Hadassah’s work in Israel–the development of its health and medical services, the inauguration of its vocational education program, and its aid to Youth Aliyah.
1959 SZOLD AWARD PRESENTED BY HADASSAH TO ISRAEL’S FIRST LADY
The Hadassah wound up its four-day mid-winter conference with the presentation of the 1959 Henrietta Szold Award to Mrs. Bacbel Yanait Ben Zvi, wife of the President of Israel. The award was accepted in behalf of Israelis First Lady by Mrs. Simcha Pratt, wife of the Israel Consul General at New York, at the closing conference session. Presentation Of the award was made by Mrs. Siegfried KramarsKy. chairman of Hadassah’s Henrietta Szold Award Committee, Created n 1949 to perpetuate the memory of the founder of Hadassah, the Szold Award carries with it a cash gift of $1,000.
Hadassah’s highest honor was bestowed upon Mrs. Ben Zvi in recognition of her “distinguished humanitarian service,” especially her devotion to the cause of Youth Aliyah, the international agency for the rescue of homeless Jewish children and their rehabilitation in israel. Mrs. Ben Zvi is the second Israeli to receive the Hadassah distinction. The Szold Award was presented to Premier David Ben Guriofl of Israel last June at special ceremonies in Jerusalem. Other recipients included former President Harry S. Truman and Associate Justice William O. Douglas, of the United States Supreme Court.
