The election campaign of Israel’s Federation of Labor, Histadrut, swung into high gear this week-end, with all three of Israel’s major labor parties taking advantage of the Passover holidays for electioneering purposes. The Histadrut elections will be held May 17.
Ahdut Avodah gathered 1,200 members and guests from all over the country at Elath, where the principal speaker was retired General Igal Alon. The left-wing Mapam, and the country’s dominant party, Mapai, invited many of their followers and other potential voters to special seder services at various kibbutzim throughout the country. While Mapai speakers made the country’s progress their principal theme, electioneering by Mapam and Ahdut Avoda concentrated on criticisms against Mapai’s “ruling system.”
