Following charges that the Manitoba Club did not admit Jews to membership, the City Council of Winnipeg voted to cease payment of dues to the club for city department heads. A resolution adopted by the Council held that “payment of dues is a form of recognition which should not be given with the tax payers’ money.” The charges against the club were made by Alderman Saul Cherniack, chairman of the Western Region of the Canadian Jewish Congress. He said the Manitoba Club had “a gentlemen’s agreement to exclude Jews and members of other minority racial groups from membership.”
