French Jews who were expelled from Egypt during the intense, Egyptian, anti-Jewish campaign of 1956, formed an organization here today to seek greater protection of their rights and better treatment from the French Government.
The Jews who formerly lived in Egypt complain they are being discriminated against because they cannot return to Egypt to liquidate their assets there. These Jews claim they are protected by the pact which France and the United Arab Republic signed at Zurich last summer, in settlement of grievances that arose after the Suez Canal campaign of 1956. Under that pact, expelled French nationals are to be allowed to return to Egypt to liquidate their assets.
To date, however, only two Jews from France have been permitted to return. The rest have been refused visas. The expellees in the new organization contend that the French Government is aware of discriminations against them, and is failing to take proper action to protect its French Jewish citizens.
