The Senate Foreign Relations Committee today confirmed by a vote of 10 to 4 the nomination of Ogden R. Reid as United States Ambassador to Israel. No obstacles are expected when the nomination comes before the Senate for final confirmation within a few days.
The four negative votes were cast by chairman William Fulbright of the Committee and three other Democrats. Theodore F. Green of Rhode Island, Russell B. Long of Louisiana, and John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts. Three other Democrats did not vote. Sen. Mike Mansfield of Montana was absent and Senators Frank Church of Idaho and John J. Sparkman of Alabama abstained.
Senators Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota, Wayne Morse of Oregon, Albert Gore of Tennessee and Frank Lausche of Ohio, the other four Democrats on the committee, joined the six Republican members in voting for the nomination.
Mr. Reid, 33, is a former editor of the New York Herald Tribune, who told the Senate Committee at the hearings that he and Mrs. Reid have been studying Hebrew for the past six months. His performance at the hearings convinced a majority of the committee, including the four Democratic Senators who voted for him, that he was qualified.
