The possibility of Mexico admitting refugees from Europe and the Middle East, including Jewish immigrants who want to come here from Eastern Europe and Arab countries for reuniting with their families, was opened today, following a visit to Mexico by Auguste R. Lindt, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Mr. Lindt came here primarily to confer with the Mexican Government, and urge it to participate fully in World Refugee Year, which will be inaugurated July 1. He conferred with President Adolfo Lopez Mateos and Foreign Minister Manuel Tello, obtaining from them formal pledges that Mexico will admit some refugees from the Middle East and from Europe.

While here, Mr. Lindt was visited by a delegation representing the Mexican branch of United Hias Service. This delegation included Marcos Mauss, president of United Hias Service in Mexico, and the local organization’s executive director, Chaim Lazdeiski. They assured Mr. Lindt that Jewish refugees who would come here to be reunited with their families would not become a burden on the Mexican community. Mr. Lindt promised to convey these assurances to the Mexican Government.
