NEW YORK (Jun. 24)
Tribute was paid last night to two American trade union presidents by American and Israeli leaders at the Histadrut Humanitarian Award dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, sponsored by the National Committee for Labor Israel. The awards were presented to David Dubinsky, president of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union, and Jacob S. Potofsky, president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America, for their efforts to “promote understanding between the people of the United States and the people of the State of Israel.”
A thousand trade union, business, civic and Labor Zionist leaders attended the ceremony, at which Joseph Schlossberg, dean of the Jewish labor movement in this country and national chairman of the committee, presented bronze plaques, and silver-embossed copies of the Jerusalem Bible to the two winners. Principal speakers at the dinner were Minister Plenipotentiary Yaakov Herzog, Israeli Charge d’Affaires in Washington, Mayor Robert F. Wagner, and others.
