A total of 617 degrees, the largest number in the history of Hebrew University, was awarded today at the University’s 29th graduation ceremony.
Women graduates received 154 of the degrees and women were among the 87 who received Ph.D degrees. This was double the total of doctorates awarded last year. Mrs. Rivka Baumgarten, a mother of two who came to Israel from Vienna, was the first woman to receive a doctorate in nuclear physics from Hebrew University.
Four Arabs were among the graduates. They included two Masters of Jurisprudence, one zoologist and one Bachelor of Arts. There were 66 new doctors, 64 Masters of Science, 127 Bachelors of Science and 22 Masters of Science for the basic medical sciences, a degree conferred for the first time this year. Nathan Kleinberger, a hand-less veteran of the War of Liberation, completed his examinations orally to graduate as an attorney.
