Reports that “hundreds” of Jewish emigrants from East European countries are now suffering starvation in Vienna while awaiting entrance visas to Australia and other lands were denied here today by S.Z. Shragai, Jewish Agency executive member in charge of emigration.
Mr. Shragai, who is now visiting the United States, said in a statement that he received a cable from Vienna establishing that there are today no more than 30 persons there living as emigrants in private dwellings and receiving aid from the International Rescue Committee. “More than 6,000 emigrants who passed Vienna at various times, have proceeded from there to Israel, about 800 have emigrated to other countries, and only 30 have now remained in Vienna, “Mr. Shragai declared.
Mr. Shragai revealed that his visit to the United States now is connected with the recent decision of the Zionist Actions Committee to admit various organizations into the ranks of the World Zionist Organization. He said he is now conducting negotiations with several American Jewish Orthodox groups to join the World Zionist movement. He is also discussing with Chassidic rabbis in New York the possibility of increasing the emigration of religious Jews from this country to Israel.
