The one hundredth anniversary of the birth of Dr. Eleazar L. Zamenhof, creator of Esperanto, was marked officially in Warsaw by government and city officials during the recent international congress of the Universal Esperanto Association, which was held in the Polish capital.
A report received here today from Warsaw gave the details of the observance. A plaque commemorating the birth of Dr. Zamenhof was unveiled in front of a building at No. 5 Zamenhof Street, in Warsaw, birthplace of the creator of Esperanto. Dr. Zamenhof was a Jew.
After the unveiling of the plaque, scientists attending the Esperanto Congress, as well as government officials, held a memorial honoring the late Zamenhof at the side of his grave in the Jewish cemetery at Warsaw. The monument erected in Warsaw to Dr. Zamenhof in 1928, eleven years after his death, had been destroyed by the Nazis.
