For the first time in many years, the Chief Rabbinate in this country received no High Holy Day messages this season from behind the Iron Curtain, except one message from Rumania, it was disclosed here today.
The office of Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Nissim today expressed concern over the fact that, among all the Jewish communities in the Soviet bloc, only Rumania, through a message from Chief Rabbi Rosen, of Bucharest, sent the traditional High Holy Day greeting.
Chief Rabbi Nissim also announced that there seems to be proof now that holiday supplies sent to Jewish communities in Soviet countries this year may have been received, although there have been no official acknowledgments. A letter was received today at the Chief Rabbi’s office from a resident of Moscow, thanking the Israel rabbinate for “the precious gift” of a lulav and an etrog, ceremonial articles traditionally used by Jews during the observance of Succot.
