Yaacov Herzog, Israeli Minister Plenipotentiary in Washington, today called for a “new international approach to the Middle East, directed to guaranteeing for its peoples peace and economic development.”
He told an American Legion executive meeting that this approach should be based on three principles: “One, the integrity and independence of all countries in the Middle East, freed from external threat and interference; two, peaceful co-existence within the region; with the outlawing of boycott, blockade, subversion and hostile propaganda; and three, large-scale economic development leading eventually to regional cooperation.”
The international assessment of the Middle East “is unduly influenced by current public attitudes in the area,” he said, adding that it was therefore “marked by a fatalistic acceptance of instability and tension as a permanent feature of the Middle East scene.” He said that while the danger of further crisis was ever-present,” on a long view the concept of the integrity and independence of all countries in the area and the sense of common destiny were increasingly striking root.”
