The One Year Study Program for American college students at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem was launched here today for the sixth consecutive year. Prof. Oscar I. Janowsky, chairman of the American Student Program Committee of the American Friends of the Hebrew University, which directs this educational undertaking, announced that applications will be accepted through January 15, 1960.
The program encompasses both undergraduate and graduate students. Although prior knowledge of Hebrew is not absolutely required, some familiarity with the language is regarded as highly desirable and candidates are urged to study Hebrew while still in America as preparation for the year in Israel.
A committee of the Academic Council of the American Friends of the Hebrew University, under Prof. Janowsky’s chairmanship, examines the qualifications of applicants, determines scholarship grants, selects the annual contingent for study in Jerusalem, and maintains contact with the students and their parents. Members of the Academic Council in various American and Canadian colleges and universities assist in personal interviewing of applicants. Students are selected for the project on the basis of scholarship, character and health.
