The Arab fight against Israel’s plans to use Jordan River waters for Negev irrigation projects reached the stage today of a Lebanese Government decision to divert the Hasbani River, one of the three principal tributaries of the Jordan River.
According to reports received here, Hussein Oweini, the Lebanese Foreign Minister, said that Lebanon planned to spend 1,500,000 pounds sterling for the diversion project, which would send the waters of the Hasbani River into another Lebanese waterway before they reached the Jordan River.
The Lebanese Foreign Minister also announced that the issue would be discussed at a meeting of the Arab Foreign Ministers in Cairo next month. It was also reported that a United Arab Republic team made a preliminary survey of the possibilities of diverting the other two tributaries, the Banias and the Yarmuk rivers.
