The Italian Union of Seventh Day Adventists called on the Italian Ministry of Defense today to release Seventh Day Adventists and Jews serving with the armed forces from duties on Saturday, the day which both observe as the Sabbath. The Union cited a section of the code of military discipline authorizing commanding officers to facilitate the practice of their religion by the members of the armed forces.

The appeal to the Ministry of Defense also cited the fact that Seventh Day Adventists who were in the Italian Civil Service were permitted to abstain from work on Saturdays and Jewish pupils in the Italian public schools were excused from written examinations given on Saturdays.
