Finance Minister Levi Eshkol met here today with Vance Brand, a director of the United States Development Loan Fund in connection with applications filed by Israel for loans from the Fund totaling $15,000,000.
The Israel Government, which has already been granted $20,000,000 in loans from the American agency, is seeking $8,500,000 for telephone equipment, $5,000,000 for industrial development and $1,500,000 for additional electronic equipment for Lydda Airport.
Meanwhile, a Cabinet committee dealing with economic problems today decided to no longer allocate foreign currency for the import of used cars. Prior to today’s decision, imports of used standard American cars had been permitted upon payment of an average customs duty of about $5,000 per car. Customs duties on imports of new cars averaged about $9,000 per car.
Under the new Government regulations, licenses will be issued for the import of used cars only to those who have legitimate foreign currency resources abroad. Others will be permitted to import only new cars at the highest customs rate.
