The United States should insist, “in the interests of peace and stability in the Middle East, “that the United Arab Republic adhere to its “international obligations to allow free passage of all ships through the Suez Canal, the Democratic platform committee was told today by the National Council of Jewish Women.
Testifying in behalf of the organization, Mrs. Leo Hartfield of Beverly Hills, also asserted that “the boycott by Arab countries of firms which employ Jews or do business with Israel, and the policy of discrimination against the posting of Jewish personnel at U.S. military bases in these countries must be opposed by the U.S. Government as a violation of basic individual rights of American citizens.”
The Council also recorded its stand in favor of basic revision of American immigration and naturalization laws. It called for “an equitable immigration formula” to replace the present discriminatory national origins quota system, an increase in numbers based on the 1960 census, “adequate provision” for refugees and elimination of distinctions favoring native-born over naturalized citizens.
