Dr. David B. Steinman, world-famous bridge designer and builder, who received his first inspiration toward his life work from the Brooklyn Bridge, in the shadows of which he grew up on the East Side as the son of a Jewish immigrant factory worker, died here Sunday aged 73.

It was in an East Side tenement where young David Steinman as a boy, decided on his career because of fascination with the Brooklyn Bridge which, later, he called “a truly miracle bridge.” He graduated from the City College of New York, and later earned a doctorate in engineering from Columbia University. He designed and built more than 400 bridges in many parts of the world, and was the author of 16 technical books on bridge design and construction.
