Professor Max Horkheimer, until recently Rector of the Goethe University in Frankfurt, has been appointed consultant to the American Jewish Committee, it was announced here today by Dr. John Slawson, executive vice-president of the organization.
Dr. Horkheimer, who is a ranking authority on Germany’s social, economic and political affairs, is a member of a 12-man commission of scholars and educators established last week by the West German Government to advise the states in the Federal Republic about methods of education in the German schools with a view to give the pupils more knowledge about the anti-democratic and anti-Semitic practices of the Nazi regime.
Dr. Horkheimer left Germany in the early days of Hitler and migrated to Geneva. He came to the United States in the mid-‘thirties and served as Director of the Institute of Social Research in New York City for more than ten years. He returned to Germany after the war and was appointed Rector of the University of Frankfurt in 1951. He has since been a foreign consultant to the United States Library of Congress. During his stay in this country, he served as research consultant to the American Jewish Committee and was editor of its five-volume series “Studies in Prejudice” widely acclaimed as a basic contribution to the social sciences.
