Israel and France Open Talks for Renewal of Economic Agreements

Israel and France opened negotiations today for a renewal of Franco-Israel economic and financial agreements for 1961 with Israel hoping to broaden its sales and reduce its highly unfavorable balance of trade with France.

Israel negotiators planned to seek particularly an easing of quotas which currently limit the quantities of textiles, clothing and industrial products Israel can export to France.

In recent months, Israel has increased economic contacts with the French economy and has contributed to that economy by placement of orders for construction of a number of ships in French shipyards hit by a lag in orders and threatened unemployment.
